Shilla Hekmat is the founder of the Shilla Hekmat Music Academy, a music educator, composer and author, who has devoted herself to enriching the lives of children through music.
Over the past three decades, Shilla has worked with hundreds of students and impacted thousands through her unique teaching approach, the Shilla Hekmat Piano Method, which develops technical skills, discipline, and inspires confidence in each student. Her method has been integrated into a series of innovative piano method books authored by Shilla herself, which have been sold nationwide.
Shilla firmly believes that with the proper method and guidance, every child, regardless of talent, has the potential to successfully connect to the art of music. She believes students need to be continually engaged, challenged and motivated to maintain their love of learning.
Shilla has been the Chairman of Composers Today at the Music Teachers Association of California since 1998. She has given lectures on music pedagogy and The Top Five Reasons Children Quit Lessons to the MTAC and published articles discussing effective methods for teaching children in Keyboard Companion Magazine. She has also judged several piano competitions across the state of California and her students have won numerous music competitions such as the United States Open Music Competition, the Young Musicians Foundation, and The MTAC Panel.
Since hearing that one of her students had been diagnosed with Crohn’s disease, Shilla has raised nearly $100k for Connecting to Cure Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation through an annual student piano recital. Shilla is also active in Looking Beyond, a charity dedicated to enriching the lives of special needs children.
Shilla lives in Beverly Hills, is married to Dr. Kamyar Hekmat and has two children, Paulina and Kevin.
